Search behavior is shifting. A growing share of buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question before they ever open a search results page — and the answer they get back often comes with a short list of sources, or none at all. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making sure your site is one of the sources these assistants actually pull from and cite.

We recently set up AEO tracking on our own HubSpot portal, and it surfaced a useful pattern: the sites that show up in AI answers tend to get the technical and structural basics right first. Here's the checklist we used, broken into the areas that matter most.

## Technical foundations

AI crawlers need to be able to reach and parse your pages before anything else matters.

- Confirm your robots.txt isn't blocking known AI crawlers (GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and similar).
- Use structured data — schema.org markup for articles, FAQs, products, and organization details — so assistants can extract facts with confidence rather than guessing.
- Keep page load times fast and avoid heavy client-side rendering that hides your actual content from simpler crawlers.
- Maintain a clean, up-to-date XML sitemap and a logical internal linking structure.

## Content that's easy to cite

Assistants favor content that answers a specific question directly and can be lifted into a response without much interpretation.

- Lead sections with a clear, direct answer, then expand with supporting detail — the "inverted pyramid" approach works well here.
- Use real headings (H2/H3) that match how people actually phrase questions.
- Add FAQ sections for the specific questions your buyers ask, marked up with FAQ schema.
- Keep your brand name, product names, and key facts consistent across every page — inconsistency makes assistants less confident citing you.

## Track it, don't just guess

The checklist above is necessary but not sufficient — you also need to know whether it's working. That means tracking how often your brand is mentioned or cited across assistants, for which questions, and how that compares to competitors. In HubSpot, this is what the AI Visibility (AEO) tooling is built for: it tracks a set of realistic buyer prompts against your business profile and reports back on visibility, citations, and competitor share of voice.

We've had this running on our own site for a few weeks now, and we'll be sharing what the data actually looks like — the good and the surprising — in a future post.
